‘Branch’ by Reuben Diamond

All over the country there are groups of newly published authors, proudly opening anthologies that have their work printed inside, who are nervous and eager to share their writing… This is the period when First Story schools are busily hosting launch parties for student anthologies. These events are a chance for the students, staff and writers to share and celebrate the brilliant writing which has been produced over the past year.

On Monday 3rd July, four Leicester schools joined together for an extravaganza of a launch at the Y Theatre. A highlight of the evening included the launch of the groundbreaking anthology Look! I’ve Written a Book by Babington Academy and The Lancaster Academy. The pieces within it are put together in unexpected and creative ways – the words spiral, cascade and twist on the page. John Berkvaitch, their writer-in-residence, said they ‘wanted to explore the physicality of books. We wanted people to grip it in their hands and smell the paper. We wanted people to turn it, fold it and hold it upside down (…) We wanted reading to be an adventure.’ Here is a taste of their imaginative anthology; a piece by Reuben Diamond who is a student at The Lancaster Academy.
