‘My Last Two Chapters’ by Grace Keenoy

The Friday Story this week was nominated by writer-in-residence at Leeds West Academy, Nik Perring, who said:

‘It’s such a pleasure to be able to share one of the stories written by one of the young writers I worked with at Leeds West Academy last academic year with the brilliant Miss Borthwick. It’s in our First Story anthology: Creations… Creatures of the Mind! and, in truth, any one of the amazing stories or poems in it could have been here because they’re all so good and so varied – and that’s one of the best things about working with First Story – there’s such a wide and interesting range of work and people – funny, scary, intriguing, devastating; this past year has been all of those things and more. Mostly, though, it’s been a brilliant experience.’

Nik Perring is a short story writer and author of five books. You can see what he’s up to at http://www.nikperring.com and on Twitter @nikperring

‘My Last Two Chapters’ by Grace Keenoy

My world is coming to an end. I’ve only got two chapters left until my author kills me off. Tragic, really.
If I’m completely honest my storyline was the best; I cheated death, fell in love, and then saved said loved-one’s life. As I said, it’s tragic. My last words will be black print on white paper; my last breath will be the space between my last word and my last full stop.
When my world ends, millions of others will too. The readers will grieve for me as if I was their friend – some will cry.
My last words are typed onto the screen. I think of how my spine will crack, my pages become fuzzy where readers turn the page, and my front cover will fade in the summer.
And, lastly, how I’ll never know any of this as I’ve only got two chapters left and my world is coming to an end.
