Language for Life Conference 2019

Creativity in Literacy, Wednesday 12th June, 4.30pm – 7pm.

First Story is delighted to invite you to Creativity in Literacy, an inspiring afternoon of professional development that we are jointly hosting with the English Speaking Union and Rooted in Reading. The afternoon will feature a keynote speech by renowned educationalist Mary Myatt.

First Story, the English Speaking Union and Rooted in Reading share a common focus on enriching the curriculum through authentic literacy activities and on narrowing the gap for disadvantaged pupils. We’re excited to come together for the first time to host a special event for English teachers in the East Midlands.

When: Wednesday 12th June 2019, 4.30pm – 7pm

Where: Priory Ruskin Academy, Rushcliffe Road, Grantham, Lincolnshire, NG31 8ED (45 minutes from Nottingham, 1 hour from Leicester by car)

Tickets: £10 including afternoon tea, booking here: http://www.lincolnshiretsa.co.uk/rir

In her keynote speech, Mary Myatt will explore the importance of high-quality talk both as a fundamental human right and as an essential plank for learning. She’ll pose the questions, is James Britton’s insight that ‘writing floats on a sea of talk’ rhetoric or reality in our classrooms? What is its relationship to reading? And how can we nurture ‘high quality talk?’

With our specialism on creative writing, First Story will present workshops on how to celebrate National Writing Day 2019, and on talk for writing with acclaimed author and creative writing tutor, Anthony Cropper. The English Speaking Union will deliver workshops on how to create a culture of debate in your school, and Rooted in Reading will introduce their reading passport programme as a route to reading for pleasure in the classroom.

You’ll be able to select your workshops on arrival, and we welcome more than one delegate per school, so do consider sharing transport with colleagues. There will be plenty of opportunity to speak to colleagues from schools across the region, and to exchange ideas to take back to your own classrooms.

Our aim is for you to leave the event with renewed enthusiasm for the power and importance of the English language and armed with creative new ways to share that joy with the young people you teach. We’d love for you to join us!
