Emotional Atlas

A writing activity that uses maps to create a story of a place.

  • Take a page of the A–Z, or a screenshot of Google Maps that is close to your location. If you’re working with a group of students make this somewhere the students know well.
  • Either individually or as a group, pick locations from the map and create a snapshot (just a line or so) of that place, e.g. ‘At Whipps Cross Hospital a hardworking and caring doctor puts faith in his best friend that she won’t trash his expensive, glimmering car’ or ‘In Epping Forest there is a bluebird that never shuts up’.
  • Use these lines to either create a story of a place or combine individual lines from a group to a create a collaborative description.
